PCA BULLetin
September 5, 2022
Two Weeks Away –

Our Southern Bull Sale is just over two weeks away – Wednesday, September 21.   Bulls will be available for viewing at 9:00 am.   Lunch will be provided.   The auction will start promptly at 1:00 pm.   We hope you are making plans to attend or to participate via one of our Stay-At-Home options.   This would be a great time to replace your high-maintenance Diesel Bulls with low-maintenance Solar Bulls.

The Most Important Factor –

When purchasing bulls, the most important factor to consider is the program behind the bulls.   Bulls that were produced in a program that aligns with your long-term goals are worth a whole lot more than bulls coming out of a program that does not align with your long-term goals.   This is so obvious it should go without saying – but few seem to understand.

It’s unfortunate, but most bull programs do not align with any commercial cow-calf operations.   Most bull programs are high-input operations with big, inefficient cows that require extra feed and extra care.   These programs continue to be focused on increasing kilos per animal (bragging rights) – instead of on increasing kilos per hectare (profit).

You need to decide where you want to take your program – and then you need to purchase bulls that will take you there.   It is not complicated!

Sale Catalogs –

If you have not already received your sale catalog, you should receive it in a few days.   In the meantime, you can click on the link below to access the online version of this catalog.

Bull Videos –

After you do a Quick Sort, you will be able to watch a short video clip of every bull that met your sort requirements simply by clicking on the lot numbers.   If you would like to see the bulls without doing a Quick Sort, click on the link below.

The first five bulls are almost 22 months of age.   The remaining bulls are 14 to 15 months of age.   As you go from bull to bull, you will see that these grass-developed bulls are very consistent in type, quality and condition.   There really isn’t a bottom end!   All of these bull have what it takes to move your program in the right direction.

Sight-Unseen or Internet –
By Kit Pharo

If you are unable to attend the sale in person, you have two Stay-At-Home options.   Which is the best option?   It depends.   Allow me to share a few thoughts.

With Sight-Unseen Bidding, you tell us which bulls you want to bid on, what your maximum bid is and how many bulls you want to purchase.   At that point, your work is done.   We will arrange to have someone confidentially handle your bidding for you.   We guarantee your bulls will be purchased at the lowest price possible.   The only problem with Sight-Unseen bidding is you will not be able to increase your bids once the sale starts.   If you have a strict budget with no room to give, then this is not a problem.

With Internet Bidding, you need to get registered with Elite Livestock Auctions.   If you don’t have a good internet connection, I suggest you use the Sight-Unseen option.   If you decide to use the internet option, I suggest you visit with a representative from Elite before the sale to find out what you need to know and what you will need to do on sale day.   With this option, you have the ability to raise your bids – if that is what it takes to get your bulls purchased.

Our bull sale will go faster than most bull sales because we provide a Base Price as a starting point.   We do not allow the auctioneer to waste time asking for a ridiculously high bid before dropping down to a ridiculously low bid.   We have gotten along very well with Elite Livestock Auctions the last two years – but it’s possible for the auction to get ahead of Elite every now and then.   This is a potential downside to Internet Bidding.

Shared Email –

To those who are thinking about buying a PCA bull, I’m glad I bought one at the first bull sale.  It took time going through the catalogue but was worth it.  The people are very helpful. If I can do it, you can do it!

Pre-Sale Get-Together –

Pharo Cattle Australia will be hosting an informal get-together the night before the sale in Wagga Wagga – and YOU ARE INVITED.   This will provide a great opportunity for you to rub elbows with like-minded producers.   This event will begin at 6:00 pm and will take place at Farmers Home Hotel, which is located at 2-6 Hammond Avenue.

Eight Kilos of Sugar –

Johan Zietsman, rancher and consultant from Zimbabwe, once said, “Grass-efficient animals look like eight kilos of sugar in a 5-kilo sack.”   We believe that is an accurate analogy.   To our knowledge, we are the only seedstock producer in the world to provide a grass-efficiency score for our bulls.

You can use our Quick Sort program to sort for grass efficiency.   Bulls with a 4+ or better score will be the very best at producing early-maturing, highly-fertile, long-lasting replacement females.   They will also be the very best at producing steers that will excel in a grass-finishing program.

Limited Budget?

If you have a limited budget, we suggest you use our unique Quick Sort program and sort only for your minimum requirements.   Leave everything else blank.   Try to keep your list of bulls as long as possible.

If you are not attending the sale in person, we suggest you use our Sight-Unseen program to bid $500 to $1000 over the base price.   Use the “Email Results to PCC” button to send us your Quick Sort and Sight Unseen bids.

Pharo Discussion Group –

One of the best perks of being a Pharo Cattle Australia customer is being able to participate in our discussion group.   This group has grown to 850 members – including 40+ world-renown experts on holistic management, genetics, mob grazing, stockmanship, soil health, grass-finishing, animal health, animal nutrition and sell-buy marketing.   I guarantee you will not find a group like this anywhere else in the world.

Many customers in the US give credit to this group for being able to have a cost of production that is half our national average.   There is no reason to reinvent the wheel.   You do not have to make the same mistakes others have already made.   The Pharo Discussion Group is a shortcut to profitable, enjoyable and sustainable ranching.   Use it to your advantage.

If you have purchased a PCA bull and if you would like to be a part of this discussion group, send your request to Kit@PharoCattle.com with “Discussion Group” in the subject line.   There are already 25 Australian producers participating in this group.
